THE REAL KING ARTHUR
There have probably been more films about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table than any other personage in history.
There are fascinating tales with knights in shining armour and turreted castles, protecting fair ladies.
The truth is far from these Hollywood inventions, which often call Arthur the King of the English. He was a Celt and spoke a language similar to modern Welsh or Irish. In other words he was a Briton. In fact in his time there was no such thing as the “English”. This name came from one of the later invading Saxon tribes, the “Anglecynn.”, who Arthur defeated and held at bay for 50 years.
I developed an early interest in the legends and have amassed a huge library of books on the subject. I have also visited many of the sites linked to Arthur. Sadly much of what you may know or believe is the elaborate storytelling of later writers.
What then is the truth?
In fact nobody knows because after the collapse of the Roman Empire and the withdrawal of the legions from Britain a cloud of darkness descended on Europe, the “Dark Ages”. Books were destroyed and apart from a few monks there is no reliable written history.
Thirty years of personal research has produced some glimmerings and I belong to the “Arthur existed” school of thought.
The Roman civilization left behind many warlike Celtic tribes, who covered vast distances on horseback, as opposed to the Romans and invading Saxons who walked. This is where the idea of “knights” comes from.

This is the nearest to reality we can get for the Arthur of legend. He undoubtedly beat them in the last battle of Badon Hill. I have been there, it always makes me shiver even if the sun is shining.
Because the Celtic tribes were always squabbling, a king or leader stayed in power by force. Murder and insurrection were always a possibility. Arthur, was killed in his last battle, at Camlan, by rebels led his own illegitimate son and then the Saxons overran the land.
The most authentic film is a BBC series that is available on DVD called “The Warrior King”. It come closest to showing how small the armies were and how Briton and Saxon lived. There is no Camelot, or Tintagel where Arthur of fiction was born. There is no “sword in the stone”, no Lancelot, no Guinevere, but the spirit of an exceptional leader.
I like to partially believe one part of the legend, which many authors recount. Arthur did not die at Camlan, he was carried away by the Lady of the Lake to the Isle of Avalon to heal his wounds. He will return in our hour of need to free the land again. Not in the flesh, his grave was eventually discovered, in Avalon, modern Glastonbury, but in spirit. The history of our “Island Race” is full of men with the same spirit as Arthur, who appeared in our hour of need.
