5K Run in Downtown Kingston to Support Education

…..GraceKennedy to host initiative July 5

Runners and walkers will take to the streets of downtown Kingston on Sunday, July 5, 2009 in support of an initiative by the Grace and Staff Community Development Foundation, the outreach arm of GraceKennedy Limited, to raise funds in an effort to sustain its education and other programmes which benefit its surrounding communities.

The 5K fund raising run entitled “GraceKennedy Education Run” carries a target of $3 million dollars, and will see the company and its staff appealing to corporate companies and Jamaicans in general to partner with them in achieving this goal to meet the ever increasing needs of the community, particular the education of young people.

“We are convinced that through the education of our youth we can safeguard Jamaica’s future. Within the corridors of our inner cities lie tremendous talent that could accrue to the benefit of these communities and Jamaica on a whole,” said Mr. Mark Anderson of GraceKennedy and Vice-Chair of the event planning committee.

Mr. Anderson said that it was the dream of the GraceKennedy Education Run, to transform the lives of young boys and girls through education, so that it will have a significant positive impact on his or her immediate family and the community in general. “Moreover, we would have placed in motion a tide of change, which will have a positive impact on generations to come,” added Mr. Anderson.

Participants will be asked to contribute monetary donations to participate in the Run, all of which will go towards the many meaningful projects of the Foundation, including providing the resources such as books, uniforms and support for students’ higher education as well as some of the social and economic needs of the communities.

The Run will commence at 7:00 a.m. with warm up exercises by (6:30 a.m.) after which participants will gather at the waterfront following the route: Harbour Street – Fleet Street – Nethersole Place – Port Royal Street – Marcus Garvey Drive, returning along Marcus Garvey Drive onto Harbour Street.

The Grace and Staff Community Development Foundation which was established 1979 is, as the name suggests, a joint project between management and staff, to facilitate the development of communities that border GraceKennedy's offices. Each company within the group and its staff make a direct and personal input in the development of the communities around them, in order to help in the process of creating and sustaining community relations.

The core objectives of the Foundation seeks to foster the spirit of volunteerism throughout Grace Kennedy and to support activities which promote community development.
