Parental Development


Parents of Inner City (PICK) was established in 1983. The organisation emerged out of the need for the parents to establish a common ground where by issues relating the educational and social development of their children could be discussed and solutions arrived at. The organisation also aims to provide a support network which enable parents to develop a high self-esteem and a positive self- conduct, thus empowering them to overcome social challenges of which they are at risk and to motivate action towards problem solving in the home and community.

To help parents of inner-city communities to acquire education and communication skills, in order to identify and resolve problems.

All families have strengths which can be built on.

Objectives

The objectives of PICK are as follows:

  • To gain a better understanding of the economic, social and political issues which affect the family
  • To establish a forum for conflict resolution
  • To make parents aware of alternatives to physical abuse as a means of disciplining (punishing) their children
  • To teach parents how to cope with the development needs of children
  • Improve self-esteem and self worth of parents and children

Activities

  • Administering and supervising the home work centres
  • Establishing parent education programmes
  • Working with other communities to identify community problems and solutions
  • Encouraging free expression and discussion on interpersonal and family issues
  • Organizing conferences and workshops on topical issues such as violence and effective leadership

Management

PICK is a registered organisation administered by an executive body consisting of a coordinator and ten (10) parents.
Presently, the organization has over 250 members who are parents from various inner city communities and whose children have been receiving educational assistance through Grace & Staff Community Development Foundation.
