GraceKennedy Foundation Supports Drama Research

Thanks to funding support from the GraceKennedy Foundation, the University of the West Indies Mona Campus will host the 5th International Drama in Education Research Institute (IDIERI 5) from July 13 and 18.  The IDIER1 is a triennial gathering of researchers, practitioners, and graduate students in the field of drama education.  The theme for this year is ‘Returning the Gaze, Reclaiming the Voice’.
The Fifth International Institute seeks to examine ways in which drama, in an educational context, can forge links between issues of colonialism, imperialism and Third World nationalism on the one hand, and of race, ethnicity and multiculturalism on the other.
This is the first time, since its inception in 1995 that the event is being hosted by a university in a developing country.  Previous hosts have been Griffith University - Brisbane, Australia; Victoria University - B.C. Canada; Ohio State University - USA; and University College – Northampton, England.

The week-long IDIERI 5 will see over 40 papers being presented by participants from all over the world including Canada, Australia, England, and Brazil. Keynote speakers will include
-     Professor Hon. Rex Nettleford, Vice Chancellor Emeritus, University of the West Indies, and Artistic Director of the National Dance Theatre Company

  1. Honor Ford Smith, co-founder of Sistren Theatre Collective;
  2. Dr.  Urvashi Sahni, founder, principal and Academic Director of Study Hall School, Lucknow, India
  3. Dr. Peter O’Connor, Ministry of Education, Auckland, New Zealand
  4. Dr. Judith Ackroyd, Associate Dean, School of the Arts, University of Northampton, England; and Professor Andrew Pilkington, Director of the Center of Research in Equality and Diversity
Brian Heap, Staff Tutor in Drama at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts at UWI Mona campus is the director of IDIERI 5.  He said the University hopes that, by hosting the event, it will be able to assist in expanding the community of drama researchers by including participation from a broad base of teachers, practitioners, artists, and academics.
